Legendary goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who inspired Germany to victory in the 2014 FIFA World Cup and earned 124 caps for his country, has announced his retirement from international football.

Neuer, a key figure in Germany’s triumph at Brazil 2014 and winner of The Best FIFA World Goalkeeper award in 2020, confirmed his decision on Instagram, marking the end of one of the most illustrious careers in German football history.

"The day had to come at some point," said the 38-year-old in a heartfelt video. "Today, my journey with the German national team concludes. Those who know me understand that this wasn’t an easy decision. I made my debut over 15 years ago against the UAE, and I still remember the nerves I felt back then.

"We’ve experienced many highs and lows together. The highlight, without a doubt, was winning the World Cup in Brazil. Reflecting on my career, I feel proud and grateful to have stood alongside my teammates on the pitch, and to have had the honor of being captain for seven years. To cap it all off, I made a comeback from injury to play at a home EURO."

Neuer’s international career spanned four World Cups, including Brazil 2014, where he also claimed the adidas Golden Glove, and he competed in 19 World Cup matches in total—only France’s Hugo Lloris has played more with 20 appearances. Neuer also holds the record for the most EURO appearances by a goalkeeper, with 20 matches across four tournaments. He was named Germany's Footballer of the Year in both 2011 and 2014 and was honored as The Best FIFA Men's Goalkeeper in 2020.

At the club level, Neuer’s achievements are equally impressive. He won 11 league titles with FC Bayern, six domestic cups, and two UEFA Champions League titles. Additionally, he lifted the FIFA Club World Cup™ trophy with Bayern in both 2013 and 2020.

As Neuer hangs up his international gloves, he leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered for generations.
